A downloadable game for Windows

A top-down bullet-hell roguelite where every run is a bet, and the house always collects.

You walk into the Pit with a starter pistol and a system. Everyone has a system.

Martingale is a survivors-like built inside a casino that wants you dead. You cut through the waves on the floor, cash out between rounds, and then the real game starts. What do you do with the money? Bank it and play it safe. Sink it into a bigger gun. Or carry it to the Fortuna terminal and let it ride.

The odds were never yours. The only question the game actually asks is how far can you get before it catches up with you.

In short:

  • Twin-stick survival combat. Kite the horde, thin it out, clear the timer
  • Gamble your payout at every layer: risky round modifiers, a live prize wheel, predatory loans
  • Two currencies, one you lose every run, one you keep forever
  • A loan system that sends something to hunt you down mid-run
  • Solo-developed, in active development, built for people who've already beaten the genre

The name

A martingale is a betting strategy. Double your wager every time you lose, so a single win claws everything back. It feels unbeatable. It's mathematically doomed, because you hit the table limit or run dry long before the odds turn. It's the perfect system for people who won't admit they're losing.

That's the game. That's the whole game.

A run, start to finish

Survive the round. Move-and-shoot combat against a rising tide of enemies. Every round you finish pays out, and the payout escalates the deeper you go, with bonuses for clean streaks.

Choose your poison. Between rounds you're offered round conditions: modifiers that crank the difficulty for a fatter cut. Faster enemies, thinner health bars, denser hordes, all in exchange for a bigger multiplier on the way out. Reroll the offers if your wallet can take it.

Work the floor. Spend your credits in the in-run shop on weapons and abilities. Prices climb every time you come back to the counter.

Hit the Fortuna terminal. The casino's own machine, sitting in the Hub. Spin the wheel for a payout multiplier anywhere from x0 to x5, where you can only ever lose what you staked. Or open the Bank.

The Bank

Take a loan. Instant credits, exactly when you need them.

Then something comes looking for you. A Debt Collector starts appearing in your runs, faster and tougher than anything else on the floor, and it keeps coming round after round until it catches you and takes everything you're carrying, or you go back and settle the loan yourself. Every round you slip away from it, the interest still bleeds off your payout.

Borrowing is the only way to wager more than you actually have. It's also the shortest road to walking out with nothing. Your call.

The floor fights back

Runs aren't just wave after wave. The Pit throws events at you mid-round. A High Roller Table drops onto the floor and dares you to hold your ground next to it while it spikes the danger, promising a fat bonus if you outlast the heat. Walk away and you get nothing. Stay, and hope you counted the odds right.

What sticks, and what doesn't

Two currencies, and the difference is the point:

  • Credits are the run. They reset the instant your health hits zero. Every bet, every purchase, every loan, gone.
  • Gems are forever. You earn them just by playing, and you spend them on permanent unlocks: new weapons, new abilities, new tools for the next sit-down. Gems are never taken away. The house can bust you a hundred times and you still leave each night richer than you arrived.

So dying isn't a punishment. It's the end of a hand. Cash your gems, unlock something new, take your seat.

Why this one, and not the other forty

Because here the gambling isn't a minigame in the corner. It's the spine. The round conditions, the wheel, the loans, the payout multipliers: every layer is the same question asked louder. Play it safe, or press your luck? The build you finish a run with is downstream of a hundred small wagers, and no two runs come apart the same way.

It's a survivors-like for people who've beaten the survivors-likes and want the genre to bite back. Climb the leaderboard if you think your system holds up.

Current state

Martingale is in active development, headed for a full release. This is a playtest build: rough edges, placeholder art, numbers still being balanced. Feedback is the entire reason it's here, so there's a form and a Discord below. Solo-developed. Steam page is being worked on.
